Finally finding a paint that I can use in my art journal or sketchbook that doesn't stick the pages together is a game-changer.

Casein is a water-based paint that uses the proteins found in milk as a binding agent. It is sometimes referred to as ‘milk paint’.

The advantages of using this paint, for those who like to sketch and use an art journal are as follows:

  • It is water-based and doesn’t need solvents to thin it.
  • It dries quickly, allowing you to add a glaze more quickly than with oil paints.
  • It becomes waterproof and doesn’t reactivate when another layer of paint is added on top.
  • You can use it in your sketchbook or art journal without the pages sticking together.
  • It dries to a lovely matt finish.

I did some swatches before testing it out in some outdoor sketches. See more: What is casein paint?
