Making a cover from resin offers an experimental approach to junk journalling. You can add collage materials, beads, paint and anything you may have in your crafty stash.

You will need:

  • UV resin
  • Heat resistant silicone mat
  • Gloves and mask suitable for resin
  • UV lamp suitable for the resin
  • Alcohol inks
  • Acrylic paint [burnt sienna]
  • Old nail drill [do not use on nails afterwards] or use a suitable tool for piercing holes
  • Collage materials
  • Super glue
  • Gel polish in black and white [or use acrylic paint]
  • Fine paint brush
  • Top coat for gel polish [or use more resin]
  • Jewellery wire [or use journal binder rings]
  • pliers
  • old brush
  • paper cut or torn to suitable size
  • bulldog clip

Step by step instructions:
Add a messy layer of the UV resin to make a square shape on top of the heat resistant silicone mat. You’ll also need some gloves, be in a well-ventilated area and use a mask.

Use alcohol ink to add some colour and mix it in.

Cure under your lamp for 2 minutes, or according to the instructions for the particular resin that you’re using.

Turn over and cure the other side.

There may be some sticky residue left on there, which you may need to wipe off with some rubbing alcohol.

You’ll need to repeat this first step to make two covers.

Add some colour with acrylic paint.

Make small holes through the thin resin. (I used a small drill, but take care and use what you have to make the holes).

Make holes that line up the front cover with the back cover.

Glue collage ephemera to the front with glue. Obviously, be careful not to get it onto your skin.

Use gel polish to add a title. You could use acrylic paint.

You will need to cure the gel polish once you’ve finished or just let the paint dry.

I used the topcoat for gel polish to seal everything in, but you could use another layer of resin.

Add some pages. I cut them down to size to fit inside and then I made holes through all the pages.

I used jewellery wire through each hole and just twisted it. You can use journal rings instead.

I wanted this junk journal to be really grungy, so I used this old brush and wrapped the wire around it.
I used some pliers to make sure it was tight enough but you also need to make sure you’ve left enough room to open the pages. I used a bulldog clip to hold it all together while I did this.
