Chain stitch is a great stitch for beginners to hand sewing. It is one of the basic hand sewing stitches that can be used for decorative borders.
  • Bring the needle up from the back of the fabric. Create a loop.
  • Put the needle back where you’ve just come up. Bring it up again and make sure the loop is behind where you’ve just brought it up and pull the thread. This is your first chain.
  • Go back where you’ve just come up, make another stitch and pull the thread to create a second loop.
  • Continue in this way until you’ve created a row of chain stitch. Be careful not to pull too tight or else the loops will look uneven and make sure to space them out evenly. And there we have a row of chain stitch.
