There are several ways to do herringbone stitch but this is the way that Make and Do Crafts teach it.
  1. Pull the needle up from the back of the fabric and sew a row of diagonal stitches.
  2. When you get the end of your row of diagonal stitches, take the needle down below to start a second row and then create another row of diagonal stitches that are going in the opposite direction.
  3. And there you have herringbone stitch.
