Make a paper rose that doesn't cost the earth. Learn how to make a rose in less than ten minutes from paper destined for the recycling bin.

This paper rose tutorial will challenge you to make flowers from materials you can find around the house or newspapers and magazines destined for the recycling bin.

At the end of this tutorial, you should have something like this. But don’t worry if you don’t, your flower may look completely different. Just enjoy the process. Watch the end of the video and I’ll show you some further examples.

Here’s what you’ll need:

4 sheets of A4 paper, or four sheets of newspaper, or
as you can see, I’ve taken some pages from an old book.

A pencil.

Sticky tape and scissors.

Create squares from the paper. Take a sheet. Fold up the bottom corner to line
up with the side. Fold over the flap at the top. Use that as a guide to cut along. Take
your scissors and cut off the flap. Do this for all four sheets of paper.

Cut strips of sticky tape and have them ready. It’s easier to prepare your tape first. Cut strips and
put them on the side of the table you’re going to be working on.

Create the stem. Using the flaps you’ve cut and your pencil, roll the paper around it. Wrap the paper tightly around your pencil and then taking a strip of tape, secure it. Then remove the pencil. There you
have a stem.

Create the petals. Take one of the squares and fold it in half. Fold it into quarters and fold again, until your paper looks like a triangle. Draw the shape of a petal, like an arch that connects the two folded edges. Then cut it our with your scissors.

Next, cut the tip off. Do the same with all four of the squares, using the first one you created as a template the others. Making sure that the folded edge is on the same side when
you draw around it and cut it out. And there you have four sets of petals.

Cut out one petal from the first set and make sure you keep all the pieces. Take the second one and
cut out two petals. From the third one, cut out three petals. Cut the fourth one in hald.
Make sure you keep all the pieces and put them in order.

Assemble your rose. Take the single petal and roll it around your pencil. Once you’ve curled the edges in, you can attach it on top of your stem. Take the tape you’ve already cut and secure it in place. Take the
two petals and roll it around your pencil. Fold it around the single petal and secure
it in place. That’s the centre of your rose.

Continue in this way with more and more petals. Take the three petals, and curl them around your pencil. Add this to your rose as the next layer. Secure in place with some tape. Take your next layer of petals and continue adding petals around the stem, starting with the smallest and working up to the largest
piece. And then arrange the rose until you’re happy with the final result.

Now it’s time to give one away, or put several in a vase.
